When they first discovered the ancienf city of Troy, the timeline did not match known historic events. The timeline was blown away when archaeologists discovered a second of Troy several the first, most recent one. Over years and more digging, scientists discovered that during different epochs, there were at least seven distinct cities of Troy! As humans we are very much like the city of Troy. We have psyches, histories and emotions that distinctly layered, yet obviously related in many ways. I am fascinated by the parallels between psychology, self-knowledge and archaeology. Sigmund was also obse with the real parallels. I often wonder what someone who dug up my soul would discover. What would my personal Archaeology look alike and what would it tell future people about me and the era in which I lived. Since I am passionate about walking and finding little objects, the magpie element would be large. I love beaches and the 'random' beautiful one finds there. While making this box of self-discovery I rummaged through some of my shoeboxes of accumulated of fun, unusal finds. First I painted several layers of cobalt, indigo and other shades of blue. Blue is my favorite color. To add depth and texture this 'background' I covered each layer of paint with gel sealant. In this way each layer of color has a separate identity. By scraping through these layers later on, I reveal the history of the piece and by extension, myself. I then emptied a box of some of my most beloved odd finds into the box. I started arranging the items, but not too much. I wanted to keep a look that would be slightly random, much like if one dug up a civilization. I removed most of the stuff I first dumped in the box. Then I covered the whole thing with archival quality craft glue. After some time, but before the glue fully hardened, I went. ack and dug out more of the objects, just leaving the essential. Then I added a couple small items that felt like they belonged. Another pouring of glue over the whole thing. Then I repeated the process of subtracting and judiciously adding several times. Until it all felt believable as a discovery that could be made a thousand years from now.
