Fragments, slogans, and worn color collide into something restless and a little bit witty. This mixed-media work is part of my FREE PUSSY RIOT Collection, which made its debut as a solo exhibition in 2017 in the Main Gallery of the American University Galleries in Paris. To create the piece, I first collected cut outs from magazine articles about PUSSY RIOT, a Russian Female Punk Rock Band, whose four members were imprisoned for their tongue in cheek protests against the regime. I also arranged photocopy-like cat portraits, a four-up block of saturated yellow, and that printed skull headline reading "FREE PUSSY RIOT" so the literal and the abstract bump up against each other. Three glossy vessel shapes, flecked with glitter, sit like found relics, their red and rust tones cutting through the cool, ashy field beneath. Lines that hint at eyes, rubbed pigment, neon pops, and small handwritten scraps add a street-posting energy that rewards a closer look.
