Today I am sharing RED GOLD PRAYERS. This is a piece inspired by visiting an exhibition about the influence of the Silk Road trading route in pre-Medieval Europe. I was taken in by the visual spectacle of objects and crafted unique items that were brought to Europe from Asia during this fruitful cultural cross polination. But more than that, I became faxcinated by the profound effects all of this trade has on culture, and science on both continents. How could I express these new splendid revelations about how we (the whole world) are all, and always have been, completely interconnected. A lattice of gilded bands divides the surface into compartments and sets up a lively field of color and found objects. Triangular tesserae fan across teal, ochre, and magenta, while bold red forms interrupt the mosaic and keep the eye moving. A round glass disk studded with tiny pigments catches nearby hues, and a shallow tray holding a green resin cluster, a metal ring, and a white ceramic spoon gives the work a tactile presence. Handwritten loops and script-like marks add a calligraphic layer that rubs against the geometric order, creating a controlled kind of chaos. What does Red, Gold Prayers make you think of most?
