SACRED BOX is a work inspired by the idea of all we hold sacred. The very meme is an open eyed meditation. I found this open wooden box outside a factory in North Philadelphia. I never could figure out what its purpose had once been. Yet I found it somehow elegant and alluring. Like it had a Shinto priest in its family somewhere. I wanted to transform it into a 3 dimensional space with a feel somewhere between a Bento Box, A Japanese Zen Garden, and Smiegels Secret Jewelry Cabinet. I have no idea why, except that most of my work is so busy and chock full of irregular rounded shapes. I thought I would try to escape my habits. Of course, hard as I worked to build straight, right angle geometry into the piece, it was not to be! My own natural chaos flooded in! Small compartments hold beads, buttons, shell fragments and tiny found trinkets, arranged like a compact cabinet of curiosities. I was drawn to the shifts of texture and tone, from deep navy and glassy beads to a bright thread of yellow running through the center. Smooth, polished pieces sit beside rough shell chips, and some surfaces catch the light while others stay matte.
