Everywhere I went, swamps and wetlands were devalued: intentionally, filled, drained or used as landfill. These critical areas are disappearing rapidly on a global scale. I created this work as a signpost reminder for us all to learn more about vital wetlands and how to preserve and restore them for the health of our planet and our own survival here. My hope is that viewers will enjoy the whimsical outlook here and the sense of joyful play. My purpose is to encourage contemplation. Swamps and wetlands are to our biosystems and ecology similar to our teeth. In each, they are an organisms first line of defense. The meditation is how we all can grow awareness and actively contribute to cherishing, preserving and protecting these areas. I chose to use found materials, hardboard, splash, spatter and drip technique to create a visceral sense of wetness, humidity— and hopefully— fragile beauty.
