SOUR PUSS is part of my Free Pussy Riot collection, which is an homage to the women of the Russian Punk Rock Band, PUSSY RIOT. In 2017, an exhibit of the FREE PUSSY RIOT paintings was commissioned by the Art Galleries of the American University in Paris, France. It was my very first solo exhibit! I was so nervous, I flew to Paris six months early, to measure the Gallery & photograph every inch of it, so I could create a scale model at home to figure out where each artwork would hang. The other reason I went was to meet and thank the Curator and students who had honored me by choosing to show my work. But back to the amazing story of the heroic women of PUSSY RIOT. These four single working moms in Moscow protested peacefully through their original music and radical style. They used their creativity to share a simple message about Freedom and its erosion in Russia. When they started to become popular, they were all arrested by special agents who stormed their apartments in the middle of the night while their children watched. They were tried and found guilty on trumped up charges of sedition under the direct orders of Vladimir Putin. The ladies were then sent to Gulag slave labor prisons in Siberia for years. Only through the efforts of thousands of people just like you and me --across the world-- did they eventually get released. Tens of thousands of every day people in more than 60 different countries kept the injustice of PUSSY RIOT in the public eye--to make their governments act on their behalf. Finally the women of PUSSY RIOT won their freedom. Here’s SOUR PUSS. I put together a patchwork of rectangular panels against a matte black field, with rough white lettering like "Free", "Pussy", and repeated "Riot" cutting through the patterns. Neon greens and electric blues sit beside deep maroon and raw black, with pops of magenta and citrus, while a pale off-center disk offers a quiet counterpoint. Repetition, collage, and splattered gestures give it an urgent yet playful energy. Take a closer look.
