Storm Warning

Storm Warning is a work inspired by my lifelong fascination with the power of storms. There is a kind of thrilling anticipation mingled with fear and wonder whenever I watch as a dramatic weather system unfolds. I used to lie down on my stomach on the porch of my cabin in Tennessee overlooking the foothills of the Smoky Mountains and watch for hours as the weather changed and developed. First the air is still and heavy. Then, a stirring of wind and a sense of pregnant, electric energy charging the atmosphere. Every storm is as different as a fingerprint and you never know what is going to happen next! I tried to capture this by creating a matrix of layered wet, juicy quinadracrone paint. Once one layer would dry over 24 hours I would go back and do it again with different colors, often adding some oil pastel streaks, acrylic matte silicon gel media and cellophane which I would massage over and into the paint with my palms. Then after another couple days when that layer dried, I would peel off the cellophane like I was unwrapping a gift! And do it all again and again, each time discovering new nuance and depth!
