I have always been very jealous of other artists that are able to conjure effects in their works. For example, there's a very talented artist from the Netherlands, who works a lot in 3-D. All of her work seems to jump off the canvas! I'm very impressed with her and at the same time, I have no idea how she does what she does. Is it in the paint themselves? Is it in how she mixes them? Is there some other chemical involved? Or am I just too primitive to understand? Ultimately, it's silly to compare ourselves to others, though it can be useful to learn some of their techniques. In this painting, I was experimenting with the idea of how in a tesselation, a repeating pattern can appear to actually vibrate and move. I don't think I actually succeeded in this piece. I believe that I didn't really create a Tesselation. The triangles do not actually vibrate and they don't really move. So if I measure my purpose against my achievement, one could say I failed completely. However, the piece is very pleasing in and of itself. I know the triangles do not really move or pop they do have an effect of receding and coming to the foreground. The colors I chose are completely unconscious. I tend to gravitate towards purples, blues, and red and pink and that is what I've done here.
