Tomb of Erebus, Nunuvut This painting was inspired by my passion and fascination with the 170 year mystery of the disappearance the entire 132 man crew of Franklin Expedition, whose goal was to find the fabled Northwest Passage. Both of the mission's ships, the Erebus and the Terror had been frozen and stuck for three years in the frozen ice. Diaries that were found with crewmember bones attested to this and told a gripping story of perseverance. All the crewmembers died and some resorted to cannibalism, based on the condition of the bones found... The bone marrow of many of these disparate remnants had been cut out and clearly eaten. For over a century the disappearance of the two ships and the story or what occurred was an enigma. However, in the last decade, both ships were found, virtually intact and in startlingly good condition --110 miles apart. They were in shallow water. It is believed that one of the vessels became free of the ice and drifted for years. And you can see the Terror simply by gazing down into the crystal clear Arctic waters that became their final resting places. 'Tomb Of Erebus Nunuvut' is intended to be an abstract meditation on the enduring layers of mystery. Finding the ships, relics and hundreds of bones only made the puzzle more obtuse. And Captain's bones have never been found. Curiously when the ship was found, the only door locked on the boat was the one leading to Franklin's private stateroom.
