Triangle Triumvirate

The painting called triangle triumvirate is special to me for several reasons. In the first place when you look at a row of triangles floating in space such as in this painting, you don't think to yourself oh, I like this triangle so much more than that other triangle. In fact, you just taken the fact that there's a row of triangles. You don't say to yourself oh I love the red in that triangle, but I don't like the deep crimson in that other triangle. The point here is not at all triangles are created equal. I think the main idea here is that the very active comparison, though very human is actually very silly. We compare ourselves to others all the time. We look at their outside, contemplate our own inside and draw conclusions. This is as foolish and senseless as looking at triangles and comparing their attributes. After years of struggling with self-worth, as so many of us do, I concluded that the very act of comparison can be very dangerous. It can be damaging to the self partially because comparisons are never a reflection of reality. All the comparison does is reflect what is going on inside of us at the time. Red orange, coral pinks cream, and all those colors tend to be very reassuring to me. I worked in that color range because I wanted to contemplate the idea that we are all unique, even if we seem similar to others. We are all special in our own way, even though we deny this on a daily basis. Our own culture denies this and throws our failures into our face. We consider our own inconsistencies, our lack of perfection, the impossibility of perfection. Then we look at other people with more money than us and we think what's wrong with me? So the real issue here is not am I making a good painting? The real purpose of this work is to draw our attention to the sheer lunacy of comparison itself.
