Under the Volcano

UNDER THE VOLCANO is one of the last completed works by Susan Sonntag. For decades I read everything she had ever written, both fiction and non-fiction. Some of it enjoyed but I always her precious, pretentious and onanististically self-absorbed. Then, when I read her last novel, UNDER THE VOLCANO, it was as though the onion skins of her narcissism were stripped away to the core. She was honest, raw and truthful and her prose was different. More immediate, more human. Perhaps this is because she knew she was dying of the breast cancer that had returned after a years long remission. This fiendish growth outmatched her relentless quest to express herself and produce work. It came to claim her life. And I was humbled. Her gay son was in my class at Harvard but I never met him, though I would have liked to. I wanted to share Under The Volcano from the 1001 Landscapes series. The top settles into warm rust and copper while the lower area holds cool violets and deep charcoal, and a patterned field of small hexagons and clustered circles gives the whole piece a steady, breathing rhythm. Rings of ochre and purple punctuate the foreground, and shifts between subtle sheen and rough matte create a tactile tension. For me it feels like erosion and buildup happening at the same time.
