When the reds of summer are fading

when the summer reds are fading slowly, somehow it seems as if they knew the day and the hour, from dark red, the colour of wine that knocks you out for the rest of the afternoon, to slightly paler red till all the flowers are but sticks in the wind and the reds take over our autumn foliage, never for more than a couple of weeks, red as blood, as freshly sliced steak, and slowly orange mixed with yellows are taken over by brown and then late autumn makes it mark with blustering wind and heavy rains and again for a season the trees are bare and the nights come early to remind us that home a fire i waiting to cheer and warm us up, when the reds of summers are fading and we smell cinnamon and oranges when passing bakeries,
