As a teenager, I came here after school almost every day. I sat, doing my home seated gazing out the Temple of Dendur and Central Park. The Wing next to the Temple contained the splendid, fascinating artwork and ceremonial objects Michael Rockefeller collected from Papua New Guinea. It is very complex, beautiful work, the furthest thing from primitive possible. The mystery of Michaels disappearance still haunts me. I hope viewers will share my love for the art that inspired this piece as well as a sense of mystery. I chose to sketch the piece very quickly from memory. Then painted in composite areas in various ochre, taupe and charcoal shades. Then I used Sharpie and Acrylic Markers to doodle in more detail in the face and fanciful totemic symbols and objets on the chest of the chieftain. I did it easily without belaboring it on the canvas. It is not meant to be perfect but a sketch composite of many memories.
